Mist rolls off forested hills and mirrors in a still, rust-brown lake, a lone fence post and wire poking through the surface. — 01 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

From above, orange tailings water floods a green valley floor up to a lone farmhouse, while fog hangs over bare, grey mine-waste slopes behind. — 02 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

A power pole stands knee-deep in ochre water that has swallowed the valley floor, a parked car and a wrapped bale on the dry slope beyond, fog drifting across the hills. — 03 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Clear morning light over a valley where orange water creeps up a grassy slope, bare trees standing in it and a pale mine-waste slope scarring the mountain behind. — 04 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

A half-sunk power pole and a drowned tree stand in mustard-orange water, a grey waste slope showing through the fog on the ridge behind. — 05 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

A lone power pole, insulators still in place, rises from a flat rust-coloured lake that fills the valley and fades into fog. — 06 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

The tiled roof of a drowned house pokes out of vivid orange and red sludge among bare trees, the rest of the building buried below. — 07 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

07 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Only the peak of a tiled roof and its chimney stay above the ochre water, a leaning post and floating boards beside it, bare birches behind. — 08 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Looking straight down on crusted orange and violet mineral banks threading through murky green-yellow water. — 09 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Close over the surface, ochre sludge swirls in soft ridges while bare branches and blue sky reflect at the top edge. — 10 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Top-down over the tailings: a power pole throws a long shadow across yellow sludge veined like a river delta, bare trees and a sunken roof at the right edge. — 11 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

11 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Aerial shot above a sea of fog filling a mountain valley, only forested ridges breaking through under a clear blue sky. The valley that hides the site stays buried under cloud. — 12 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

A barbed-wire fence and a haystack on the shore of a misty lake at sunrise, dead trees poking out of the water. Morning fog hangs over the flooded valley and the hills behind it. — 13 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

Looking down on a plain of grey mining sludge, pale channels branching across it like veins toward a glint of light. The waste has swallowed everything that used to be here. — 14 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Top-down view of a thin brown stream winding through cracked, folded ridges of pale grey sludge. It reads almost like a mountain range seen from orbit. — 15 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

15 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

A murky green-brown channel cuts diagonally through slabs of buckled grey sludge. Up close, the mining waste looks like a frozen landscape of its own. — 16 / 23shot on DJI Mini 4K

Red and white barrier tape stretched across a concrete runoff channel carrying rust-orange water, the ground on either side crusted white. The toxic outflow runs off into bare winter woods. — 17 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

A potholed gravel road leads to a gatehouse with a lift barrier beside a weathered two-storey workshop, the low sun hazy above. It is the way in to the working mine next to the site. — 18 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

18 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

A long, weathered concrete workshop with rows of broken windows stands beside a muddy gravel road, backlit by a hazy sun. Tyre tracks and puddles show the road is still in use. — 19 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

Tattered national and EU flags fly over a railed viewpoint at the edge of an open-pit mine, its pale stepped walls glowing in the sun. Forested mountains roll away behind. — 20 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

A vast open-pit mine spirals down into shadow, its terraced walls lit gold on the far side, with an excavator parked on the rim. The hills beyond fade into a hazy mountain horizon. — 21 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

21 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

The stepped walls of the open pit catch the late sun while its floor sits in shadow, a yellow excavator working the near rim. The mine is still active, still producing the waste that buried the valley. — 22 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro

Hand-painted protest graffiti on a concrete bridge pillar, with a chalk tricolour and a drawing of mountains underneath. Someone wants the buried village remembered. — 23 / 23shot on Pixel 8 Pro
