A galvanised steel trash rack lies tipped on its side in the undergrowth, its bars buried in fallen leaves and branches. It shows the grate that once guarded the drain's mouth, now pulled loose and left in the brush. — 01 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A heavy galvanised steel grille bent and torn open at the drain's entrance, its bars splayed over a bed of dead leaves with scrub pushing through. A rag hangs from the crossbar, caught there by past floods. — 02 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

Looking out from inside a concrete box culvert towards a slanted steel grate choked with branches and debris, the floor a carpet of wet leaves. Flaking concrete, a cracked ceiling joint and faded graffiti frame the barred way out. — 03 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A long concrete box culvert runs straight into darkness, its chamfered ceiling joints stepping away in rows above still, dark water. A pale scrap hangs from the ceiling and shows again as a reflection in the pool below. — 04 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A long rectangular concrete box culvert runs straight into darkness, with segment joints framing the tunnel like nested doorways above a floor of silt and shallow water. A broken-out opening in the right wall shows where a side pipe once came in. — 05 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

The inside of a concrete box culvert, its pale walls lit by a flashlight, with a blue spray-painted tag on the left and a dark tar-sealed joint running across the ceiling. Dry leaves and gravel sit on the floor where the box turns into darkness. — 06 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

Shot from just above the waterline, the concrete box culvert stretches away to a black vanishing point while a sandy bank of sediment builds up along one wall. The walls and ceiling joints mirror cleanly in the shallow water. — 07 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A round concrete pipe opens into a stained, patched headwall, with a dark trickle of water running out of its throat into a muddy pool. The nested rings of the pipe pull the eye down a tunnel too small to follow. — 08 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

Looking down a round concrete storm pipe that narrows to a smaller barrel at its end. On the left, a white plastic lateral pipe has been patched roughly into the wall, and a low channel of water runs along the floor into the dark. — 09 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A dead laptop, its screen caked in dried mud, sits open on the culvert floor beside its power brick and tangled cable, with the concrete tunnel fading to darkness behind it. Leaves and debris scattered on the floor show how far floodwater carries things in. — 10 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A ruined laptop lies open on the concrete drain floor, its screen caked in dried mud and its keyboard full of silt, with the charger and tangled cable beside it. Something somebody once worked on, washed down here and left to the dark. — 11 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

A broken plaster replica of the Aztec sun stone lies on the drain floor among dust, concrete chunks, glass shards and a dried leaf, lit by a flashlight. It is an odd bit of debris washed or dumped into the pipe. — 12 / 13shot on OnePlus 15

Close up on the drain floor, a banded brown and yellow snail shell lies in wet sand, swarmed by small red worms. A small sign of life in the damp grit of the culvert. — 13 / 13shot on OnePlus 15
