A concrete headwall with a double steel trash rack, choked with leaves and debris, sits at the bottom of an overgrown wooded ravine. Water trickles out over mossy stones, under a chain-link fence and the tree canopy. — 01 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A concrete headwall in a wooded ravine, its barred grate packed solid with fallen leaves above a shallow, swirling pool. The way in sits hidden just below a row of backyard fences. — 02 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

An empty, dark box culvert lies under a rusted overhead grate that lets in cold daylight, with roots hanging from a mossy concrete lintel. A small barred opening at the end of the tunnel frames green foliage beyond. — 03 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

The open mouth of a concrete box culvert. Daylight comes through ribbed skylight panels in the roof and lies in bright stripes on the shallow, leaf-strewn water, then the channel runs straight on into darkness. — 04 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

Looking diagonally into the skylit section of a concrete storm drain. Mossy roof beams frame corrugated translucent panels, and their light falls in stripes on the dark standing water. — 05 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

Past the skylights, the culvert becomes a long run of identical chamfered concrete box segments. Torchlight falls on the pale walls and the shallow silty water, and the tunnel fades to black. — 06 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

Inside the box culvert, two round side pipes open into the walls, each with a dark streak running down from it to the floor. The chamfered segments repeat into the dark beyond the wet concrete floor. — 07 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A square concrete box culvert lit by flashlight, its chamfered segment frames stepping away into total darkness. Rust stains on the ceiling and puddles of standing water on the floor show the tunnel still carries water. — 08 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A long, dry stretch of the concrete box culvert running straight into the dark, with a broken stick hanging from a ceiling joint. A rust-streaked inlet pipe opens through the right wall above a damp patch on the floor. — 09 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A low concrete box culvert runs into darkness over a bed of loose rubble and pale stones, lit warm from the left. A rusted, torn pipe juts out of the right wall above long streaks of rust and water staining. — 10 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A single green beam picks out the mouth of a square concrete drain, its stepped segments falling away into black. Most of the frame stays dark, with only wet patches on the floor catching the light. — 11 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A crouched silhouette holds a small green light in a square storm drain, with a blue beam lighting the receding concrete segments behind them. Green light ripples across the left wall and pools on the wet floor. — 12 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A figure stands in the middle of a dark concrete box culvert, a red headlamp blazing where their face would be. Blue and green spotlights cast two oval pools on the side walls, both mirrored in the wet floor, turning the plain drain into a colour-split stage. — 13 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

Two small side pipes in the drain wall, glowing red and green from lights placed inside them, beside a dark concrete tunnel leading away. Light painting turns a plain culvert wall into something like a signal. — 14 / 17shot on OnePlus 15

A long exposure light painting: a pale ribbon of light loops into a spiral and a looping knot in the middle of the dark tunnel. A crack along the concrete ceiling is just visible at the top left. — 15 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS

A camera on a carbon tripod at the mouth of a wide, flat-roofed concrete box culvert, with a bed of river stones running back into the dark. It shows how wide and low the drain is. — 16 / 17shot on OnePlus 15

Looking out from inside the dark culvert toward its mouth, where a row of vertical steel bars and a small gate hold back storm debris. Daylight and green trees fill the opening beyond the grate. — 17 / 17with Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS
